The city is known for its year-round nice weather and its central location it’s only 10 miles away from the major city of San Bernardino. But if you are in the neighborhood, it's well worth a stop-over just for something different.Yucaipa is a city with a population of about 54,000 situated in San Bernardino County. Overall, don't drive hours just to check this place out. Small and family run, this place has very limited hours (I think something like 9-5, Tuesday through Saturday). Not sure how quickly the beer turns over, so may have some freshness concerns, but I have not had any problems with my purchases. I suspect this would be a great place to be a regular. Service is good, the people seem a little reserved, but I don't know them well. This place can be your choice- a grocery store, a beer store, or a deli- you can order sandwiches, pull a beer from the cooler, and have a little picnic in the biergarten. A limited selection of branded glassware is also available. One tap (basically a kegerator), last time I was in it was Warsteiner. I have found lots of German beers here I have not seen elsewhere in Southern California (with the possible exceptions of Hi Time Wine or Hollingshead in OC, but I haven't done a direct comparison).Īll German beer, some wine available too. The cool thing here is that they won't have one from each brewery, they have 3, or 4, or 5 from each, so that you can have a brewery's dunkel or helles or hefe or marzen, depending on your mood.

Oh, this is supposed to be about beer, isn't it? The back wall is several cooler doors, displaying many different German beers from lots of breweries (Aktien, Allgauer, Tucher, Weihenstephan, Paulaner, Aying, Schneider, to name a few). Lots of German posters on the wall, quiet German music playing, and postcards from friends around the world behind the cash register. Along the front and side walls are coolers for deli items and fresh cut meats- all the germanic brats and liverwursts and schnitzels and potato salads etc. Look out for the "mini-shopping carts"- quite a funny sight. To the left are 2 aisles of bread/European packaged groceries, etc. As you enter, by the door/cash register, you will see a few tables and a door to an outdoor "biergarten" (small covered patio with a few picnic tables). This little family-run operation (founded in the 1950's) is located on Calimesa Road, just off the County Line Road off-ramp of the 10 Freeway, between Yucaipa and Calimesa, on the road to Palm Springs.Ī little building with a very small interior provides authentic German food and drink from an authentic German family- it really reminded me of my childhood. Vibe: 3 | quality: 3 | service: 3.5 | selection: 4 | food: 4 Nice selection of German glasses as well as six different steins, the Bitburger one was coolįood looked good, but too early in the morning to eat a sandwich, maybe eat there next timeĮverything was very cheap and six packs of Paulaner Octoberfest Marzen was only six dollarsĬool little place out in the middle of nowhere that is worth checking out if you ever are passing by on the 10 freeway, and yes Bob's Big Boy is down the street The guy I talked to was helpful and told me about a website where I might be able to find some Andechs They have fridges in the pack filled with nothing but German beer, filled with Paulaner, Warsteiner, Atkien, Erdinger, etc. There were definitely a few guys throwing down some Warsteiners on tap at ten in the morining, but I could not bring myself to do this, 12 ounce glasses were only $2.50 though, very good deal This place looked super old from the outside, but they had a cool-looking old beer garden on the right side of the building Owned by a German family that has been there for well over tthirty years, people working there seemed to be in their 70s at least Vibe: 4 | quality: 3.5 | service: 4 | selection: 3Ģnd stop on my small and short Calimesa trip today, this place was only about a ten minute drive from my apartment
